Any extra work that can be done inside the church, the hall and on the grounds (leaves, lawns, weeds) would be greatly appreciated this week. We’re having a number of visitors next weekend…not the least of whom is our bishop. Thanks so much.

• Sunday – Tuesday, 12/28 – 30 Teen and Young Adult Trip to Mt. Hood
• Friday, 1/2 — Pan-Orthodox ethnic food and dancing hosted by our college students and young adults. More information soon. Mark the date.

Please note:
You are encouraged to donate new Coats and HUGS this Advent. (Coats in honor of St. Martin of Tours’ gift of half his cloak to a beggar. HUGS stands for Hats, Underwear, Gloves, Socks.) Last year lots of people gave other clothes as well. The clothing will go to local organizations which assist with poor, needy and homeless. There will be a hamper in the narthex for collections. Thanks.
Reservations for the Salmon Banquet on St. Nicholas Day are being taken now. We need to get an exact count today. Tickets will be $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Reservations are necessary. No walk-ins, please. Please sign up on the board in the Hall and indicate how many will be in your party. We will have tickets available next weekend.

Holy Apostle Andrew — November 30
Synoptic / Acts references:
• Listed in the call of the first fishermen / disciples who left all things to follow Jesus;
• Appears to have lived adjacent to the synagogue in Capernaum (of Galilee)…family home w/ Peter and Peter’s wife and mother-in-law;
• Son of Jonah / John;
• Eventually one of the 12 Apostles;
• Sometimes present with Peter, James & John (the three “inner circle”) at important moments in the Savior’s ministry;
• Listed as being present at the Pentecost event.
St. John’s references:
• (along with John the Evangelist) Disciple of John the Baptist during Jordan ministry;
• (to Peter): “We have found the messiah. And he introduced Peter to Jesus.”
• With his friend Philip, a native of the fishing town of Bethsaida;
• @ the feeding of the 5000, Philip comments on the insufficiency of even the equivalent of $17,000 (i.e., 200 dinarii — a laborer’s minimum wages for 200 days) being enough money for the bread needed; Andrew finds the boy with the picnic meal of 5 barley loaves and 2 small fish, “But what are they among so many people?”
• Some Greeks wanted to see Jesus (just after the triumphal Entry on Palm Sunday); Philip tells Andrew, together Philip and Andrew tell Jesus.
(Andrew = a missionary: He introduces Peter to Jesus, he introduces the little boy with the picnic lunch to Jesus, he introduces the inquisitive Greeks to Jesus…)
Other references and traditions:
• Eusebius (4th century): quoting Origen (3rd century): Andrew was a missionary in Asia Minor and along the Black Sea (along the Volga, Romania and to the Dnieper to Kiev — southern Russia and Ukraine); some traditions have him traveling even as far as Georgia;
• Patron of missionaries;
• Said to have established the church at Byzantium / Constantinople;
• Martyred at Patrae, north-west coast of Achaia in Greece (+ 11/30/60) during Nero’s Persecution;
• X-shaped crucifixion = 14 century legends;
• Since 750 Andrew has been the patron of Scotland — relics taken there (to St. Andrews)
