Take a look at this 1959 article by Fr. Alexander Schmemann re: The All American Councils of our church.  Though not absolutely applicable in every detail to this past week’s Council in Bellevue, it has much to say to us about the nature of conciliarity and hierarchy: http://www.schmemann.org/byhim/churchhierarchal.html

Have fun while building relationships of support with formerly homeless families and children! On Thursday, October 27, a Halloween party for formerly homeless families is happening at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church at 6:30 PM.  The folks at St. Andrew’s have invited the folks at St. Nicholas’ to help out with this event.  We need a few parishioners to help out with some simple booths, snacks, and a piñata at the end.

People who have experienced homelessness often lack community, support, and a sense of belonging.  Even something as simple as a Halloween party can be a way of helping people feel that they have friends in their corner.  This is a great way our parish can get involved in making a difference for homeless families. Please see Paul Schroeder or Dn. Kevin.

Friday & Saturday November 18 & 19 — Journey To Light Icon and Chant Festival here at St. Nicholas and at St. Clare.  You’ll receive special information this week.

Please remember that every parishioner is encouraged to attend Saturday Vespers on a regular and frequent basis…i.e., if possible more Saturdays than not.  (Note last Sunday’s bulletin.)  Additionally, we should all participate in Confession during Advent, Great Lent and during one of the Lenten seasons during the summer months.  This presupposes an ongoing life of liturgical participation (weekends and feasts), Holy Communion, prayer, fasting, abstinence, almsgiving, works of mercy, biblical lectio, (reading) quietude, meditation, etc.  Many people try to make Orthodox Christianity fit in with the surrounding culture.  But ours is a very “counter-culture” faith, unlike many other spiritual groups.  Those to whom much is given, much is also asked.  This may mean (re)prioritizing calendars.  But know that this is not only our gift to God.  It is also a blessing received from Him.

From the Prolog of Ochrid: St. Longinus stood beneath the Cross
When, on the Cross, Christ breathed His last.
Longinus beheld the wrath of the mild sky,
Witnessed the earth as it shook,
And the bright sun as it lost its rays
And clothed the whole world in darkness.
The tombs of many were opened,
And many of the dead appeared alive.
Brave Longinus was filled with fear,
And exclaimed with a remorseful sigh:
“This Man was the Son of God!
Sinful men have crucified the Innocent One!”
Next to him, two other soldiers
Echoed the exclamation of their centurion.
Longinus was a witness of the Resurrection,
And he could attest to His humiliation as well.
An eyewitness, a true witness,
Longinus desired to not conceal the truth,
But proclaimed it everywhere he went,
And glorified the resurrected Christ God!
To his death he remained Christ’s soldier;
And for Christ, Longinus gave his head.

In the Orthodox Church, it’s the norm for all communicants to live a life that is consistent with and appropriate to receiving the Holy Mysteries.  This means that we not only maintain an ongoing life  that reflects the Gospel, the Epistles, the canons and dogmas of the Christian Faith, but also that we prepare for Holy Communion.  There are a number of ways involved in this.  Regular prayer, fasting, abstinence, confession, scriptural study, almsgiving, works of mercy, parish stewardship and attendance at divine services.  Additionally, it is expected that regular communicants prepare for the Sunday (or festal) Divine Liturgy by attending Vespers on the eve before we approach the chalice.  This is, of course, not always possible every Sunday or feast day.  But it is the norm.  The standard.  The canon.  The rule, rather than the exception.  Eastern Orthodoxy is not a “Sunday only” faith.  Each day, each week, each season is characterized by certain cycles of protocols.  One of those cycles — the weekly Resurrectional cycle — begins at sundown on Saturday with Vespers.  Please give serious consideration to making regular participation at Vespers (ideally no less than twice a month) part of your spiritual discipline and preparation for Holy Communion.  This may mean (re)prioritizing calendars.  But know that this is not only a gift to God.  It is also a blessing received from Him.

St. Sergius Troparion, Tone 4 — A zealot of good deeds and a true warrior of Christ our God, you struggled greatly against the passions in this passing life; in songs and vigils and fasting you were an image and example to your disciples, thus the most Holy Spirit lived within you, and you were made beautiful by His working.  Since you have great boldness before the Holy Trinity, remember the flock which you have wisely gathered, and do not forget to visit your children as your promised, O venerable Sergius, our father!

Rejoice, O Cross of the Lord,

Through you mankind has been delivered from the curse.

Shattering the enemy by your exaltation, O all-venerable Cross,

You are a sign of true joy.

You are our help, you are the strength of kings,

You are the power of all the righteous and just,

You are the majesty of priests.

All who sign themselves with you are freed from peril.

You are the rod of strength under which we, like sheep, are tended.

You are a weapon of peace round which the angels  stand in fear.

You are the divine glory of Christ Who grants to the world great mercy.
